Radiopuhelimet s/t CD

"The world is changing and changing, but Radiopuhelimet is and remains. The guitar rock legend from Oulu, who rarely releases albums, found himself in a disgusting situation when Cosmic Unconsciousness, released in early 2020, was overtaken by the pandemic. But what's the unfairness of the universe when you can hook a new worm and the simply named 16th long play bursts into the ether with a released swing.

As far as I know, the band hasn't released anything since the summer 2020 EP duo Empty is Full &; Mustard and Ketchup. This has given us time to collect and work on the material in peace, as we didn't have to do those gigs for a while. At the moment, the oldest material is Demonstration at Amnight, taken from the 2005 play Tommi. The song is pure tango with Annunen's lyrics, somewhat surprisingly, but even the bass artist can see it with pens. Nor does the chanting of the tango make the hands of the people of Oulu freeze, at least not in the opinion of the undersigned.

The singles from the album have not been cut as usual, but if we were to go into such nonsense, I might prefer the deliciously confusing Deep Sleep dive as my choice. Horns and guitars roar refreshingly freely on the track, yet everything is bound together by a personal sound moving along the edges of the noisy rock. Another great model specimen is "Age is a number", which stretches with no wave, and the quotation marks in the title are fully justified in just under four minutes. Of course, the opening track Cold Sweat empties the pajazo right at the start, declaring that the band is back with force.

Radiopuhelimet know their games, paintbrushes and pitches, while still avoiding any reliance on the 'familiar and safe'. On the one hand, the band certainly understands what is expected of them, and the Radiopuhelimet album sounds like a familiar beat to many. But still, there is always a surprising edge, an unpredictable rush in new directions, with unfamiliarity always jostling around the corner with its fumes in the air. You see it, you feel it, and then you don't really see anything directly. Maybe that's what has made the band so enduring and brilliant.

As usual, vocalist Mäki lets go at full speed, and I can't help but admire the gentleman's ability to infuse seemingly ordinary words with such different downloads, underscores and insinuations always according to the situation. For example, Letters from the Middle Class is basically impossible as a text, but Mäki now takes over words rather than words. The crush adds laps to the plane and the funeral of the Ideas guides the listener to wake up in this world that is only getting crazier.

Did the 16th time say the truth? Of course said, just like the 15th and 14th times, because Radiopuhelimet don't go off the hook. Some may complain about how Radiopuhelimet the new album is, but then you haven't absorbed and heard nearly everything that the 11 songs give. This is live sound, pulsating rock, swing honed with noise and northern groove without the yoke of rules." - Mika Roth / Desibeli.net
