Lights In A Fat City – Sound Column CD

"Lights In a Fat City is a trio as obsessed with the ambiguities of sound as much as the composition of it. SOUND COLUMN's noises dance on a vertical plane where the didjeridus ascend and descend carefully and crystalline shards of bells and cymbals sit frozen in the air. There is a sense of great vastness on these four lengthy tracks, as voids between notes create a spellbinding and stark effect. Kenneth Newby, Eddy Sayer, and Stephen Kent respectfully dedicate this recording to the true spirit of the Aborigines, but the textures they evince represent a more universal conduit. SOUND COLUMN speaks from the soul, and is played with a historically ingrained encoding of cultural environment and cultural integrity. Sayer's hybrid harp and discreet, quasi-industrial crashes; Newby's exotic sampling and playing of unusual instruments like the p'iri; and Kent's monolithic didjeridu's besieged by animal horns make for music ignorant of any trendy, pat categorizations." - All Music
