Harris, Herb - Blurry Vision seven inch recording
Raised in the North, educated in the South, the music of Herb Harris straddles that Mason-Dixon Line between the past and the present, the country and the sophisticated, folk-art and “high” art. His debut single on Rob’s House Records gives winks and nods to Blind Willie Johnson and Johnny Cash, with some violins and fire added to the mix. Shake your bells and sing along!
The a-side, Blurry Vision, began as a campfire song and that magic was able to be captured with this wonderful recording. Its layers are simple but the essence rings strong as Herb strums the rhythm of the blues. Fire is an instrumental track with layers upon layers of stringed instruments including bowed guitars, stand-up bass and violin. The song is kept steady by an almost tribal drumbeat and though the song is lyric-less, a message can be felt.
When he’s not howling and bangin’ and acoustic guitar, he’s shouting and strumming an electric one with the band The Selmanaires. A band to watch, The Selmanaires released their debut album on International Hits records and have followed it up with constant touring. Furthermore, their Standing in Line at an Elevator 7”, released on Rob’s House Records sold out in just a few months, placing them in the running for Atlanta’s hottest band alongside The Black Lips and Carbonas.
This 7” is the first in a series of ‘solo-projects’ scheduled to be released by Rob’s House Records. Next in the series and available now is Herb’s twin brother Jason’s Carroll Street Caprice 7”.
