"This one might be a hard sell -- 16 untitled tracks of largely acoustic guitar instrumentals (sometimes banjo instead of guitar, sometimes with some kind of mouth harp I think, sometimes with rudimentary percussion on occasion) on a self-titled record with virtually no info in the booklet and by a guy with a hard-to-pronounce French (or is it Italian?) monkier. Thomas Bonvalet by birth, he goes by L'ocelle Mare here, and I'd highly recommend his work to anyone who likes Derek Bailey, David Grubbs / Gastr del Sol, Ben Chasney / Six Organs of Admittance and the like. In other words, this is acoustic guitar played at the outer reaches of conventional technique, with lots of complicated plucking and strumming, as well as frequent percussive uses of the string and body. The song structures are complex and challenging as well -- but don't let any of this sound intimidating! They are quite compelling little pieces, each with a logic and appeal of its own." - T.M.
