Greus s/t lp
Edu Rodriguez and Iván Ruíz are two musicians with a long history of driving through the desert at night. Both have accumulated more than fifteen years playing in groups: Edu taking charge of the drums in Madrid's Moho (one of the reference formations on the European stoner rock scene) and Iván in legendary formations such as Moksha or the old school hardcore heroes XMilk ( in which curiously he played the drums and not the guitar). After just over two years in which the duo has been macerating the songs in oak barrels (their concerts opening for the Americans Eagle Twin are unforgettable), we can finally sink our teeth into their first LP, -, recorded -of course it could be otherwise - by Santi García, at the Cal Pau Recordings studios. With a curriculum like that of this couple of friends, only a fucking madman could expect an electronic record or author's song. Indeed, what we find is a collection of -almost- entirely instrumental songs that will have Tony Iommi petting his cat by the fire with a smirk on his face, nodding slowly in time to the music.
The album opens with a heavy and energetic rock whiplash (Brou de cultiu) that never seeks the foreseeable path and that makes us salivate at the prospect of seeing Greus live. Sabbath, Melvins, High On Fire, Celtic Frost. Mitochondria, the second song, is the least direct moment on the album. Cathedral, Boris, Earth. Ten minutes in which the group takes us on a journey, in an imaginative and atmospheric compositional tour de force that constitutes the centerpiece of the album and that perfectly summarizes all the virtues of the duo: using certainly recognizable stylistic patterns in order to renew them and be able to project the personality of the group. Glue, El No Yo and Cervical 3 put things back in place: doom sludge riffs on songs worked and executed mercilessly, in which Iván and Edu show their rapport, accelerating and lifting the accelerator masterfully. Fire and destruction to regenerate!
