Hewhocorrupts - The Discographer CD

"This almost ridiculous (and I don't mean that in a negative way) collection contains a massive 61 tracks in 64 minutes, spanning this chaotic, grinding metalcore act's 1998 - 2003 back catalog of out of print EP's, split 7"s, compilation tracks, and some unreleased/demo material to boot.? Included are songs from splits with Fordirelifesake, Don't Worry About It, Infestation of Ass, Godstomper, Tusk, Third Degree, and Wilbur Cobb; the "Master of Profits" 7"; the "Murderous Grind Attack" compilation; the "Optimus Prime" demo; and then some.?? And like Anal Cunt, I have to give these guys credit for actually making me crack a smile compliments of their hilarious song titles, though thankfully they've actually got some musical chops in tow so the song titles aren't the only item of value here. But let's face it, it scarcely gets much better than "Young Boy Gets Cancer (After Smoking Your Ass)", "?One Block East, Two Blocks Up Your Ass'", "Too Much Cock at the Cocktail Party", "Young Boy Yelling at Mom (Mom Hid Boy's Metallica T-Shirt)", "Q: Can I Sample This? A: No", or "A Nice Warm Cup of Shut the Hell Up". That's just good comedy, folks. Musically expect lots of maniacal screaming and tons of short songs (do the math - 61 tracks in barely over an hour) full of everything from chugging grindcore tremolo picking to sludgy discordance to wild flurries of chaotic metalcore dissonance, blasting drum fills and snappy basslines that often pop out, tempo changes and quick rhythmic shifts galore, and so on. The first 10 songs are unreleased live tunes recorded on WZRD in 2002, and I have to say I'm shocked at how good the sound quality is. Not only because it's live on the radio, but because it's extremely loud and noisy music live on the radio. But the mix is almost perfectly balanced, and the crispness of the percussion and hugeness of the bass tone alone are fucking great. Plus the vocals don't dominate or anything. Very nicely done. After that it's a truly shocking cover of "Welcome to the Jungle", complete with all of the solos and everything, performed to impressive accuracy with just the right amount of sarcastic attitude and amusing Axl Rose mimicry. Who would've thought? Then it's four unreleased songs that are remixes/re-recordings of tracks from older releases with improved sound quality. The subsequent tracks from the splits and such kind of blur together since they're all similar in style and possess only marginal differences in recording quality. Some of the sessions are a little thinner and lack the prominent bass presence that I enjoy in the bulk of their work, but none of it sounds intolerable at all, and for as wacky as their songwriting is it actually tends to sound pretty good. The demo is of course a bit different (at least two years older than all of the other material), using lower vocal growls and having some minor tape hiss going on, but the entire collection plays fairly consistently considering, and I don't have any real complaints. The layout keeps it simple with black and white printing on a matte finish that's all setup like a collage of newspaper articles. Sadly the lyrics aren't included (I guess they would've had to use really small typefaces to fit everything in), but the fake newspaper articles that all reference the band are pretty fucking amusing, so these dudes definitely have an awesome sense of humor that's pulled off in a manner that I can actually hang with. This is a good collection and one that's been fairly well handled, so fans of the band should be all over this. The only thing that throws a wrench in it for me is that I can only take this kind of stuff in small doses, so while there's a lot of cool material here and this release definitely makes me appreciate the band's attitude more than I have in the past, there's just no way I can listen to an hour of it back to back. So... I like it, I appreciate what they're doing for the most part, but this type of collection is definitely probably best suited for fans who are really into speed and frantic performances. Not bad, though. This definitely gives me a new perspective on these guys." - Aversion Online
